Inspiration at the Bird Feeder

Inspiration at the bird feeder by Eileen McKenna
This week I only had to glance out my window for inspiration. There are always birds at the feeder and unfortunately squirrels too. I’ve been in a good routine since the start of the year. Monday through Friday I sit and paint after I get back from bringing my son to school. I try not to get involved in anything else because then I may not get around to painting. Even if it’s a day I go out to work, I sit and paint for 15 minutes – if possible.

My goal for the new year was to work within themes, which I’ve done here and there. This week I definitely had a theme going on. Previous weeks I’ve worked on Valentine’s Day illustrations and more recently St. Patrick’s day illustrations. I’m really excited about the items I’ve been adding to my Etsy shop. 1. Gorgeous drawings. I would give my eye teeth to have a squirrel visit my bird feeder. I get Rosella’s mainly, sometimes Indian Miner birds (also classed as vermin in Australia, because we have our own Australian Miner). All are welcome, and all are delightful.

    • Thanks Barbara! The Rosella looks so colorful online. Why would you be interested in a squirrel? They are constantly hanging upside down from our feeders 😂

      • Yes squirrels are athletic little animals. I like all animals and I think if you put food out, especially in the winter you can’t really decide who comes to help themselves. I am from England originally and I just adored seeing squirrels running around the woods, I always thought they had a sense of humour about them. Rosella’s are stunning birds and definitely also have a sense of fun, as do most parrots. I love the way they pick up the sunflower seed with their beak and then transfer it to their claw and eat it, then of course they make a huge mess with the husks.

  2. I love our bird series, lovely little paintings.

  3. Nice birds! Did you sketch first?
