This month I worked almost daily painting the beach. It’s a place that is very close to my heart. I grew up just a few blocks away from it. My mom referred to it as our backyard. I played there, I worked there, and eventually brought my own kids there.

I learned a lot this month. I’ve tried different techniques to capture the foam of the ocean – leave the white of the paper, use a white gel pen, use lots of white gouache. I’ve used different blues in my ocean mixture. I painted landscapes, as well as people close up. But, I feel it’s just the tip of the iceberg. There is so much more for me to learn and explore within this theme. So, not surprisingly, I’m continuing with my beach painting project. It probably would have been better to declare this a 100 day project from the start. Although that would have been a bit intimidating.
Sounds like sweet memories for you, Eileen! ππ I’m enjoying your series! π
Thanks Jill!
I β€ the old pic! Your sketches are homing along nicely. The shell looks fantastic, great job!
Thank you π
What a wonderful memories Eileen π Your lesson learnt were really helpful.
Thanks Snehal π
i love the foam β€ looks really great π
Thank you so much!
It’s great to follow along! I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with next.
Did you come to find a favorite technique among the three you mention for the foam?
Thanks Marion! I think using the white gouache is my favorite. It’s the technique I’ve been going back to. Hope all is well with you! π
It is! Thanks! I think I need to get a large tube of white gouache π Have a nice weekend.
Wow! You just gave me another idea – something, again, that I hadn’t thought of. Sticking with a related theme for a period of time! I’ve been all over the map because I want to paint everything. But I think I should do like you and stick with a subject for a month or longer. What an excellent idea! That’s two posts of yours now that I got something out of that was not the main subject. Thank you so much!!!!! π
Carol, I’m so glad you are getting something out of my posts. I found it to be really beneficial to work within a theme or medium for an extended period. You can find posts about this, but back in October I drew everyday in ink, then November it was all food in watercolor, and for December it was all Christmas. Working everyday – which I struggle to do – within the same theme, really produces results. I can see the progress since I started painting the beach. You can really see it in my Instagram bio @eileenmckenna.
Keep me posted on your progress! Thanks, Eileen
That is awesome that you do that. That’s got to take discipline. I must discipline myself because I’m all over the map. I want to paint everything!! π I can’t figure out Instagram so I just stay on WordPress for my art stuffs.
Believe me I’m also all over the place! Forcing myself to focus so I see progress. You have to try Instagram. Once you get the hang of it you’ll find it easy.
Isn’t that just a phone app? I’d do Instagram if I could use my desktop.
You can set up your account on the desktop, but have to post from you device.
